How to solve: computer Freezes when transferring data from server?
Q. I'm working on a computer at work and every time I try to transfer data from the server the computer completely freezes up. Even the keyboard -- the num lock keys won't even turn off or on! It seems to connect to the internet okay and I haven't found any other problems but everything goes awry when trying copy files from the server to the desktop. Any ideas?

A. How are you transferring files? You may want to use a different protocol or client.

All in all, if this is a work problem, you should be talking to your IT people.

A. check in device manager under USB devices to insure there isn't a conflict with the flash drive. if there is, click the device with the yeller exclamation point, and select update driver. check windows update first, then check the manufacturer's website. if everything is good there, make sure you are logged on with an account with write privileges to the flash drive.

How does one use a serial cable and null modem to transfer data between computers?
Q. I have an old laptop that does not have removable storage. Its an old 486 machine with no USB or ethernet/modem. I want to transfer data to/from it with my desktop PC. The notebook also has Win 3.11, and the DOS version is 6.2. How would I go about doing this?

A. In order to do it using a serial cable, you'll need some software on the old machine. Something like Laplink. Getting a version that will run on Win 3.11 will be a problem.

I would suggest pulling the hard drive out of the old machine and connecting to your new computer. You can use an external drive enclosure like this one.
