How do I transfer data from an internal hard drive to an external hard drive?

Q. The motherboard on my laptop fried, so instead of getting it fixed, I'm opting for a new laptop. The only problem is, my old laptop has a lot of work on the hard drive I'd like to keep. I have an external hard drive, but I can't very well use the old laptop to transfer the info because the monitor doesn't work. How can I transfer data from the internal hard drive to my external hard drive so I don't lose all of that work?

A. Borrow another monitor and plug it into the VGA socket on your laptop.

I want to transfer data between 2 pc attached to 2 phone lines without use of internet and user intervention?
Q. I am facing a problem these days and need your help. I want to transfer data between two computers attached to two individual phone lines through modems without the use of internet and without any user intervention.
Also If some sort of software is to be installed on the computers to perform the above task, is it possible to install it on 2nd computer without going to the location of that pc.

A. You could configure one PC to be a remote host for the other one, the same as if you were calling the Internet but instead you call the other PC. Both machines would need some configuration and you'd need to go (or have someone Else go) to the other machine to do it.
Then, when you want to transfer files/data, one PC would need to call the other.
You could set up something to do that automatically but it would be tricky to start and how would it know when it had finished to hang up?

Programs such as Laplink and PCAnywhere have that kind of functionality

How to solve: computer Freezes when transferring data from server?
Q. I'm working on a computer at work and every time I try to transfer data from the server the computer completely freezes up. Even the keyboard -- the num lock keys won't even turn off or on! It seems to connect to the internet okay and I haven't found any other problems but everything goes awry when trying copy files from the server to the desktop. Any ideas?

A. How are you transferring files? You may want to use a different protocol or client.

All in all, if this is a work problem, you should be talking to your IT people.
