Is it possible to transfer data with just a RJ-45 cable, or do I need to get an expensive USB data transfer cable? I have done it with a wireless network in the past, but it is extremely slow. It took about 24 hours to transfer 15 gigs. What should I do?

The best way to do this is using a Crossover Ethernet cable. You can plug one end of this onto the network port on one computer, and the other end into the network port on the second computer. This connects the two directly with speeds up to 1gbps (approx. 20 times faster than standard 54mbps wireless)
You will need to set up a shared folder, though, and make sure the wireless connection is DISABLED, as the wireless will automatically override the wired connection :)

I have a desktop, and laptop I wish to transfer data between. I can do this over the internet, but I know that a direct connection would be fastest. How do I do this?
Burning a disc might work, also using a jump drive, but I'd rather a transfer cable, that will work in ALL situations.

I am using Windows XP as my operating system, plan to purchase a laptop, but Vista is now the current operating systems in new laptops. Can I transfer data using the usb 2 port between the computers. I could not locate any information on Windows XP help, I find their help usually is not much help at all.
